President John Dramani Mahama has nominated Klottey Korle Member of Parliament, Dr Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, as Minister-designate for Environment, Science and Technology, subject to the approval of Parliament.
The nomination, announced on Friday, August 7, 2026, forms part of a ministerial reshuffle undertaken by the President in accordance with Article 78(1) of the 1992 Constitution.
A statement signed by the Minister for Government Communications and Presidential Spokesperson, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, said President Mahama had submitted Dr Agyeman-Rawlings’ name to Parliament through the Speaker for prior approval.
If approved by Parliament, the medical doctor and politician will take charge of a ministry at the forefront of Ghana’s environmental protection, climate action, scientific research, technological innovation and sustainable development agenda.
The appointment comes just months after Dr Agyeman-Rawlings enhanced Ghana’s profile on the continental stage by winning election as the Second Vice President of the Pan-African Parliament (PAP). She secured a commanding victory during elections held in Midrand, South Africa, becoming one of the top leaders of the African Union’s legislative body.
Her election was widely hailed as a major diplomatic achievement for Ghana, strengthening the country’s influence in continental legislative affairs. As Second Vice President, she serves on the PAP Bureau, helping to steer the institution’s legislative agenda, democratic governance initiatives and regional integration efforts.
Dr Agyeman-Rawlings has represented the Klottey Korle Constituency since 2017 and has served on Parliament’s Environment, Science and Technology Committee, where she has consistently advocated environmental sustainability, climate resilience and improved public health. Her parliamentary work has also focused on peace and security, governance and humanitarian issues.
She is currently the Chairperson of the Security and Intelligence committee of the 9th Parliament.
Her nomination to head the Environment, Science and Technology Ministry is expected to leverage both her parliamentary experience and growing international profile as Ghana intensifies efforts to combat climate change, address pollution, promote biodiversity conservation and advance science and technology as drivers of national development.
The President also nominated Majority Leader and Bawku Central MP, Mahama Ayariga, as Minister-designate for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs.
In addition, President Mahama reassigned Hon. Kenneth Gilbert Adjei to the Ministry of Defence, while Ahmed Ibrahim, MP, was moved to the Ministry of Works, Housing and Water Resources.
The nominations and ministerial reassignments will be referred to Parliament’s Appointments Committee for vetting before consideration by the House.
