The Executive Secretary of the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC), Dr Shafic Suleman, has commended the Ghana National Gas Company Limited (Ghana Gas) for what he describes as improved financial performance, urging the company to sustain the gains and strengthen its fiscal position.
The PURC delegation visited the Takoradi Distribution Station (TDS), Distribution Valve Stations (DVS) 1 and 2, the Sekondi Regulating and Metering Station (SRMS) and the Atuabo Gas Processing Plant (AGPP).
According to Dr Suleman, the visit provided the Commission with an opportunity to engage directly with technical teams and observe the operations underpinning Ghana Gas’ contribution to the power value chain.
He said a financially viable and operationally efficient Ghana Gas was critical to the sustainability of the country’s energy sector, particularly given the company’s strategic role in the processing and transmission of natural gas for power generation and other industrial uses.
“I commend Ghana Gas for their improved financial performance and encourage the company to sustain this trajectory while continuing to expand its operations and strengthen its fiscal position,” Dr Suleman said.
He emphasised that the sustainability of Ghana’s energy sector required effective institutions, prudent management and continuous investment in critical infrastructure.
“Ghana Gas has an important role to play in this journey,” he said, urging the company’s management and staff to build on the gains achieved in recent times to deliver continued operational and financial excellence.
The PURC Executive Secretary’s comments come against the backdrop of the Commission’s broader efforts to deepen engagement with utilities and other critical players across the energy value chain. PURC has previously undertaken working visits to Ghana Gas facilities to better understand operational challenges and identify areas for improved collaboration.
Dr Suleman said the Commission would continue to collaborate with critical sector players in pursuit of Ghana’s broader national development objectives, while ensuring that the regulated utility sector remains financially sustainable and capable of delivering reliable services.
The PURC’s official designation for Dr Suleman is Executive Secretary of the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission. The Commission’s website identifies him as Dr Shafic Suleman and lists him as the Executive Secretary.
Ghana Gas, formally the Ghana National Gas Company Limited (GNGC), remains a strategic component of Ghana’s energy infrastructure, with its facilities connecting domestic gas resources to power generation and other users. The company’s operations at Atuabo and its gas transmission network are therefore central to the reliability and cost-effectiveness of the power value chain.
Dr Suleman’s call for continued investment reflects the need for Ghana Gas to maintain and expand its infrastructure while improving operational efficiency and financial resilience as demand for natural gas and reliable energy continues to grow.
