Spain were crowned world champions for the second time after edging defending champions Argentina 1-0 after extra time in a gripping 2026 FIFA World Cup final at New York New Jersey Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, on Sunday.
Substitute Ferran Torres emerged as Spain’s hero, scoring the decisive goal in the 106th minute of extra time to settle a tense contest that had remained deadlocked throughout regulation time. His clinical finish ended Argentina’s hopes of becoming the first nation since Brazil in 1962 to successfully defend the FIFA World Cup title.
The victory marked Spain’s second FIFA World Cup crown, adding to their maiden triumph in South Africa in 2010, and completed an extraordinary era of dominance for La Roja, who have now conquered both Europe and the world. Arriving in North America as reigning UEFA European champions, Spain capped a remarkable campaign by defeating the reigning world champions on football’s biggest stage.
Spain controlled much of the final with their trademark possession-based football, creating the better scoring opportunities while frustrating Argentina with disciplined defending and relentless pressing. The European champions looked the more dangerous side throughout the contest before eventually finding the breakthrough in extra time.
Argentina’s task became even more difficult after Enzo Fernández was sent off late in the match following a second yellow card, forcing the holders to finish the contest with 10 men as Spain pressed for the winner.
The final brought the curtain down on the biggest FIFA World Cup in history. The expanded 48-team tournament, jointly hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico, featured 104 matches and showcased football’s finest nations over six weeks of thrilling competition.
Spain’s route to the title highlighted their consistency and quality. Luis de la Fuente’s men defeated Austria 3-0 in the Round of 32, overcame Portugal 1-0 in the Round of 16, beat Belgium 2-1 in the quarter-finals and eliminated France 2-0 in the semi-finals before defeating Argentina in the final.
For Argentina, the defeat ended a spirited title defence after victories over Egypt, Switzerland and England in the knockout stages. However, the South Americans were unable to find a way past a disciplined Spanish side determined to reclaim football’s biggest prize.
More than 80,000 spectators packed New York New Jersey Stadium for the final, while millions more watched across the globe as the expanded FIFA World Cup reached its climax.
With the final whistle confirming Spain as champions, jubilant celebrations erupted among the Spanish players and supporters as they awaited the official trophy presentation, bringing to a close an unforgettable World Cup campaign that saw them conquer Europe before reclaiming the world title.
