The 2026 FIFA World Cup is set to become the most dramatic transformation in the history of football’s biggest tournament, with a series of first-time innovations expected to reshape the global spectacle both on and off the pitch.
For the first time ever, the World Cup will feature 48 nations instead of the traditional 32-team format, opening the door for more countries to compete on football’s grandest stage. The expanded structure will increase the number of matches from 64 to 104, making it the largest tournament ever organised by FIFA.
Another historic first is the hosting arrangement. The competition will be jointly staged by three countries — the United States, Canada and Mexico — marking the first time the World Cup will be hosted by multiple nations across an entire continent.
The tournament format has also been redesigned. Teams will compete in 12 groups of four, with the top two sides and the eight best third-placed teams advancing to a newly introduced Round of 32. As a result, the eventual champions will now need to win eight matches instead of the usual seven to secure the trophy.
Beyond football, FIFA is preparing to introduce entertainment elements inspired by major American sporting events. The 2026 final is expected to feature the first-ever halftime show in World Cup history, adding a new entertainment dimension to the global event.
Broadcast coverage is also likely to see major changes, including halftime interviews and expanded Video Assistant Referee (VAR) interventions on controversial corner-kick situations.
The tournament is equally projected to set new commercial records, with ticket prices expected to become the most expensive in World Cup history amid unprecedented global demand.
Organisers are promising one of the most ambitious sporting productions ever staged, with opening ceremonies and fan experiences spread across 16 host cities in North America.
The tournament will run from June 11 to July 19, 2026, with the final scheduled to take place in New York/New Jersey in the United States.
