A new landmark honouring Ghana’s first President, Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah, has been unveiled at Krisan in the Ellembelle Constituency, giving the historic area a permanent symbol of the legacy of the man whose journey to African liberation began in nearby Nkroful.
The Osagyefo Roundabout was unveiled on Friday, September 18, 2026, by the Member of Parliament for Ellembelle and Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, on the eve of the grand celebration of NkrumahFest 2026.
The monument, situated at the Krisan Roundabout, is expected to serve as a lasting reminder of Dr Nkrumah’s contribution to Ghana’s independence, African unity and the broader Pan-African struggle.
For the people of Ellembelle, the unveiling carries particular historical significance as the community welcome visitors and dignitaries to Nkroful, the birthplace of the former President, for this year’s commemoration.
Mr Armah-Kofi Buah described the monument as a lasting commitment to preserving Nkrumah’s memory, emphasizing the importance of ensuring that the legacy of the man celebrated as the African of the Millennium remains visible to present and future generations.
The unveiling formed part of activities marking NkrumahFest 2026, which is being held under the theme: “Nkrumah @117: Celebrating His Enduring Legacy – Africa Must Unite or Perish.”
The annual celebration, also known as the Journey to Nkroful, seeks to bring renewed attention to Nkrumah’s vision for a united, self-reliant and prosperous Africa, while promoting the historical and cultural significance of his birthplace.
This year’s festival coincides with the 117th anniversary of Dr Nkrumah’s birth on September 21, 1909.
The celebrations at Nkroful are expected to attract political leaders, traditional authorities, academics, cultural practitioners and members of the public to reflect on the former President’s contribution to Ghana’s independence and the Pan-African movement.
Renowned Kenyan scholar, lawyer and Pan-Africanist, Professor Patrick Loch Otieno Lumumba, is scheduled to deliver the keynote address at the celebration.
Other dignitaries expected to grace the occasion include the Minister for Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Abla Dzifa Gomashie; Chief of Staff, Dr Julius Debrah; and the National Chairman and General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress, Johnson Asiedu Nketia and Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, respectively.
The unveiling of the Osagyefo Roundabout adds a new physical feature to the landscape of Ellembelle as the host another edition of a festival dedicated to preserving the memory of Ghana’s founding President.
As NkrumahFest 2026 draws attention to Nkroful and the historical roots of Ghana’s independence struggle, the monument at Krisan is expected to stand as a reminder that the Osagyefo’s legacy remains deeply connected to the people and communities of his birthplace.
