President John Dramani Mahama has nominated Majority Leader and Leader of Government Business in Parliament, Mahama Ayariga, as the Minister-designate for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs in a ministerial reshuffle aimed at reinvigorating governance and accelerating grassroots development across the country.
The nomination is widely regarded as one of the most strategic changes in the reshuffle, placing Ayariga at the centre of President Mahama’s drive to strengthen decentralisation and deliver inclusive development through Ghana’s Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs).
As Local Government Minister, Ayariga will be expected to spearhead the implementation of the President’s local development agenda by deepening decentralisation, strengthening district assemblies, improving sanitation, enhancing local revenue mobilisation and promoting community-driven development across the country.
The ministry occupies a critical place in Ghana’s governance architecture, serving as the link between central government and local authorities while coordinating development planning and the delivery of essential public services at the grassroots.
A seasoned lawyer, legislator and public administrator, Ayariga brings more than two decades of experience in governance and public service to the portfolio. Since entering Parliament in 2005 as Member of Parliament for Bawku Central, he has established himself as one of Ghana’s most experienced lawmakers. As Majority Leader and Leader of Government Business in the Ninth Parliament, he successfully steered key government legislation and policy reforms through the House.
His ministerial experience spans several strategic portfolios. Under President Mahama’s previous administration, he served as Minister for Information and Media Relations, Minister for Youth and Sports, and Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation. Those roles equipped him with extensive experience in policy implementation, public administration and inter-agency coordination.
Beyond politics, Ayariga is an accomplished legal practitioner with a Master of Laws (LL.M.) degree from Harvard Law School and a Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of Ghana. He also co-founded the Legal Resources Centre, an organisation dedicated to promoting access to justice, human rights and community empowerment.
Mr Ayariga’s legislative experience, administrative background and consensus-building approach make him well placed to lead reforms within the Local Government Ministry at a time government is seeking to improve service delivery, modernise local governance and strengthen accountability at the district level.
His nomination is expected to inject renewed momentum into the ministry as the government intensifies efforts to empower local authorities, accelerate infrastructure development and ensure that the benefits of national growth are felt in communities across Ghana.
With this new role if approved by Parliament, Mr Ayariga will assume one of the most influential portfolios in President Mahama’s administration and is expected to play a pivotal role in translating the government’s decentralisation and local development agenda into tangible improvements in the lives of Ghanaians.
