Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has praised the Managing Director of the National Investment Bank (NIB), Chief Dr. Doli-Wura Awushi Abdul-Malik Seidu Zakaria, for leading the remarkable turnaround of the state-owned bank from years of financial distress to profitability through transformational leadership and sound corporate governance.
The Speaker made the commendation as the Special Guest of Honour at the launch of Chief Dr. Zakaria’s autobiography, Rebuilding Confidence, Restoring Strength, describing the NIB Managing Director as a visionary leader whose ability to revive struggling public institutions should serve as a model for state-owned enterprises.
Mr. Bagbin said Chief Dr. Zakaria had consistently demonstrated an exceptional capacity to transform institutions, noting that his leadership had revitalised several public organisations before restoring NIB to financial health.
He recalled that although many questioned whether someone without a banking background could rescue the institution, Chief Dr. Zakaria’s extensive experience in business, governance and public administration enabled him to steer the bank through a successful recovery.
The Speaker observed that NIB, established in 1963 as Ghana’s first development finance institution, had once played a pivotal role in financing the country’s industrial growth before years of governance challenges weakened its operations.
According to him, the bank’s return to profitability demonstrates that institutional renewal is driven not merely by capital injections but by strong governance, accountability, discipline and effective leadership.
He said the lessons captured in Rebuilding Confidence, Restoring Strength provide valuable insights for leaders of public institutions, urging state-owned enterprises to embrace transparency and sound management practices to improve performance and deliver greater value to the Ghanaian economy.
Mr. Bagbin congratulated Chief Dr. Zakaria on the publication of the book and also commended the Board, management and staff of NIB for their collective efforts in restoring the bank’s fortunes, describing the institution’s revival as a powerful example of how disciplined leadership can transform public enterprises into profitable and sustainable businesses.
