Ewurabena Aubynn Launches Ablekuma North Supporters Union as Akweibu Wins Victory Cup

The Member of Parliament for Ablekuma North, Ewurabena Aubynn, has launched the Ablekuma North Supporters Union as part of efforts to mobilise community backing for Ghana’s national teams while promoting grassroots sports development in the constituency.

The launch coincided with the maiden edition of the Ewurabena Aubynn Victory Cup, a community football match organised to commemorate her victory in the 2024 parliamentary elections and to deepen youth engagement through sports.

The event, held on Saturday, March 14, 2026, at the Wesley Grammar School Astro-Turf, was organised in collaboration with the Ablekuma North Sports Union (ANSU) and drew residents from across the constituency.
The newly inaugurated Ablekuma North Supporters Union is expected to serve as a platform for mobilising residents, particularly young people to support national sporting teams while also championing sports development and community initiatives within the area.
As part of the celebrations, Akweibu emerged champions of the maiden Victory Cup after defeating Otaten in a penalty shootout following a goalless draw in regulation time. Both teams represent communities within the constituency.
Organisers say the Ewurabena Aubynn Victory Cup would become an annual event aimed at nurturing young football talent while fostering unity, discipline and healthy competition among the youth.

Speaking at the launch, Hon Ewurabena Aubynn said the initiative forms part of her broader vision to use sports as a catalyst for youth development and community cohesion.
“Sports has the power to unite communities, build discipline and nurture leadership among young people. Through this initiative, we are not only rallying support for our national teams but also creating opportunities for young talents in Ablekuma North to shine,” she said.
She added that the supporters’ union would also help create a structured network of volunteers and community advocates who would champion development initiatives across the constituency.

The Minister for Sports and Recreation and Member of Parliament for Buem, Kofi Iddie Adams, who served as Special Guest of Honour, commended Ms Aubynn for the initiative, describing it as aligned with the sports development agenda of President John Mahama.
Captain of the Akweibu team, Jake Sampah, expressed gratitude to the Ablekuma North lawmaker for creating the platform and pledged the team’s continued support for future editions of the competition.

Akweibu received the tournament trophy and a cash prize, while runners-up Otaten were also presented with a cash reward for their performance.
The Municipal Chief Executive for the Ablekuma North Assembly, Adamu Musah Kalamu was in attendance.
The event brought together sports enthusiasts, youth groups, traditional leaders and political supporters, turning the occasion into a celebration of community spirit and local talent.
