Ghana Unveils Support Package for Citizens Fleeing Xenophobic Attacks in South Africa

The Government of Ghana has announced a comprehensive “Welcome Home” support package for Ghanaians being evacuated from South Africa following renewed xenophobic attacks targeting foreign nationals.
In a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the government said affected citizens returning home would receive financial, social and reintegration assistance aimed at helping them rebuild their lives safely and with dignity.

According to the ministry, the package includes a “Welcome Home Financial Package” for evacuees, transportation assistance to help returnees travel to their destinations across the country, and a reintegration allowance to support their resettlement process.
The government also announced free psychosocial support services for victims who may have suffered trauma during the attacks and evacuation process.
Additionally, returnees will be enrolled into a special national database designed to connect them with job and startup opportunities as part of efforts to restore their livelihoods.
The government reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the welfare of Ghanaian citizens abroad and assured evacuees of continued support upon their return.
“We value and cherish all our citizens,” the statement emphasized.
The announcement comes amid growing concerns over recurring xenophobic violence in parts of South Africa, which has in the past affected several African nationals, including Ghanaians.
