Adomako-Mensah Slams PURC Over Silence on Nationwide Power Fluctuations

Deputy Ranking Member of Parliament’s Energy Committee, Collins Adomako-Mensah, has criticised the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) for what he describes as its failure to communicate with the public over recent power disruptions affecting parts of the country.

The outages, which have been intermittent, are linked to a fire incident at a Ghana Grid Company facility near the Akosombo Dam, as well as ongoing transformer upgrade works in some areas.

Mr Adomako-Mensah argued that PURC, as the statutory body mandated to protect utility consumers, should have proactively engaged the public and provided timely updates on the situation.

He questioned the Commission’s silence, noting that it had previously taken decisive action against officials over similar disruptions.

“I am surprised PURC is very quiet. This was the same PURC which, in 2024, sanctioned board members for failing to provide a timetable for a dysfunction that disrupted the Ghanaian consumer,” he said.

Speaking on Channel One TV on May 2, 2026, the Afigya Kwabre North MP expressed concern about the continued lack of communication from the regulator despite widespread reports of electricity fluctuations.

“There have been fluctuations all over, and I am surprised to date PURC has not released any statement. That is quite surprising,” he added, insisting that the Commission has a responsibility to keep consumers informed during periods of unstable power supply.
