The Ghana Institute of Governance and Security (GIGS) has commended the Ghana Armed Forces for the progress made on the Accra-Kumasi Expressway project and called for continued military-led construction until its completion.
In a statement signed by Dr David Agbee, Executive Director of GIGS, and issued on September 4, 2026, the Institute praised the military high command for its continued oversight of the critical infrastructure project.
The commendation follows a working visit by the Chief of the Defence Staff, Lieutenant General William Agyapong, and the Chief of the Army Staff, Major General Lawrence Kwakye Gbetanu, to inspect progress on the Accra-Kumasi Expressway.
GIGS urged the Ghana Armed Forces and personnel involved in the project to sustain the current pace of work through to completion, including the asphalting phase.
The Institute also commended President John Dramani Mahama and his government for the vision and foresight behind the expressway project, describing it as an important intervention towards addressing one of the country’s pressing infrastructure needs.
It said the project demonstrated strong leadership and commitment to national development and encouraged the government to sustain the momentum until completion.
GIGS further called on the government to mobilise the necessary machinery and resources to enable the Ghana Armed Forces to continue construction without interruption.
According to the Institute, the visible progress in shaping and forming the road corridor, as well as the associated bridges, indicates that the project is advancing steadily.
It said the progress reflects the discipline, capability and commitment of the Ghana Armed Forces engineering units engaged in the project and called for consideration to be given to formally commending the officers driving the work.
GIGS backs full military-led execution
GIGS has also called on the government to consider awarding the Ghana Armed Forces full responsibility for the construction and supervision of the entire expressway corridor.
The Institute believes continued military-led execution would ensure speed, discipline and effective coordination throughout the remaining phases of the project, while helping guarantee that the expressway is delivered to the required standard and within the expected timeline.
GIGS reaffirmed its support for infrastructure initiatives that serve the national interest and said it would continue to monitor developments on the project.
