The recovery and revitalisation efforts of the Tema Oil Refinery have received a major boost following the arrival of approximately one million barrels of Bonga Crude Oil to support renewed refining operations.
In a statement issued on Wednesday May 27, management of the refinery disclosed that the crude cargo arrived aboard the MT Cap Felix as part of TOR’s ongoing operational recovery and crude processing programme aimed at restoring stable refinery activities and strengthening Ghana’s energy security.
According to the statement, the crude oil was purchased from Shell plc and supplied through TOR’s tolling partner, Triangle Commodities Trading, under a strategic arrangement designed to ensure sustained petroleum product supply to the domestic market.
Management described the development as another important milestone in the refinery’s recovery agenda, noting that the arrival of the crude cargo is expected to significantly improve local refining capacity while reducing Ghana’s dependence on imported refined petroleum products.
The refinery explained that Bonga Crude is noted for its low-sulphur quality and favourable refining yields, making it suitable for the production of premium petroleum products including liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), gasoline, diesel, kerosene, aviation turbine kerosene (ATK), and fuel oil for both domestic consumption and regional distribution.
TOR further indicated that the latest crude supply forms part of broader efforts to reposition the refinery into a commercially sustainable and competitive energy hub capable of supporting industrial growth and fuel security in Ghana and across West Africa.
Management also expressed appreciation to the Government of Ghana, regulatory institutions, financial partners, and other stakeholders whose support, it said, continues to contribute to the refinery’s operational resurgence.
The company reaffirmed its commitment to transparency, operational efficiency, environmental responsibility, and stakeholder engagement as refining activities progress.
The latest development comes amid renewed national attention on the strategic role of TOR in reducing fuel import pressures, stabilising petroleum supply, and supporting Ghana’s long-term energy independence agenda.
The Edmund Kombat led management has undertaken significant reforms including staff welfare improvement and ongoing major reconstruction of facilities to reposition strategic national asset to enhance energy security for the country.
