Eban-Akoma Discovery to boost Ghana’s Energy Security and Industrial Future

Ghana’s journey toward energy independence and industrial growth has received a major boost with the formal Declaration of Commerciality (DoC) for the Eban-Akoma oil and gas discoveries located in the Cape Three Points Block 4 (CTP-B4).

The announcement by the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition marks a significant milestone in the country’s upstream petroleum sector.

The Declaration, submitted by a Joint Venture (JV) made up of Eni Ghana Exploration & Production Ltd, Vitol Upstream Tano Ltd, Woodfields Upstream Ghana Ltd, and GNPC’s subsidiary Explorco, in partnership with the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC), affirms the commercial viability of hydrocarbon resources discovered in Eban-1X (oil) and Akoma-1X (gas and condensate) wells.

According to a statement signed by Spokesperson and Head of Communication of the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition, Richmond Rockson, Esq, the successful appraisal of the Eban-Akoma fields which concluded on July 3, paves the way for domestic development of the resource.

It said the move will significantly enhance Ghana’s energy security by reducing dependence on imported fuels and strengthening the country’s capacity for energy self-sufficiency.

Energy and Green Transition Minister, John Abdulai Jinapor, described the declaration as “a clear testament to the Government’s commitment to the sustainable development of Ghana’s hydrocarbon resources.”

“The Declaration of Commerciality for the Eban-Akoma discoveries is a major boost to our oil and gas sector. It highlights the immense potential of our offshore resources to fuel economic transformation, enhance energy security, and drive Ghana’s industrialization agenda,” he stated.

The Eban-Akoma discovery is expected to contribute substantially to Ghana’s domestic energy mix. The availability of additional oil and natural gas resources comes at a critical time when the country is advancing plans for a 24-Hour Economy and scaling up its industrial base, both of which require stable, affordable, and locally-sourced energy.

Beyond energy supply, the declaration sets in motion the next phase, the preparation of a comprehensive Plan of Development (PoD) by the JV partners.

The Plan of Development will focus on maximizing resource recovery, promoting local content participation, and ensuring that value from the project is retained within the Ghanaian economy.

The Ministry also assured that it will collaborate closely with the Petroleum Commission and GNPC to provide oversight and ensure that project development aligns with national interests. Additional technical and commercial evaluations are underway to finalize a long-term development framework that benefits both Ghana and its partners.

This milestone, the Ministry stressed, reinforces Government’s commitment to building a resilient, transparent, and investor-friendly energy sector that delivers long-term value to the Ghanaian people.

As global energy dynamics shift and the demand for sustainable energy security intensifies, the Eban-Akoma discoveries position Ghana as a key player in the West African energy landscape, one with the resources and policy direction to support both domestic and regional energy needs.
