The Electoral Commission (EC) has called on political stakeholders and the general public to remain patient, stressing that the polls closed only 23 hours ago.
At a press conference on Sunday, December 8, the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Jean Mensa, reassured Ghanaians that the official results of the presidential and parliamentary elections would be announced once they have been thoroughly verified.
Jean Mensa explained that the commission is working within a 72-hour timeframe to complete the necessary verification process.
Her comments followed a call from the National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, who urged the EC to promptly declare the results after the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential candidate, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, conceded defeat.
The EC Chairperson emphasised that the commission is engaged in a meticulous process to ensure accuracy and transparency in the final results. She urged the public to remain calm and allow the EC to fulfil its constitutional duty.
“We would like to ask that citizens exercise patience it’s just been 23 hours since the close of polls. The process is elaborate and it involves the political parties’ agents and observers at every step of the way. We will announce the results if they are ready before 72 hours.”
She added that the EC has results from only the Ahafo Region and is working on results from other regions.
