Ablekuma North Member of Parliament, Ewurabena Aubynn, is taking the government’s Nkoko Nkitinkiti initiative beyond the distribution of birds, transforming it into a sustainable constituency-based farming project aimed at creating jobs, supporting vulnerable residents and equipping students with practical agricultural skills.
The MP has established the Ablekuma North Constituency Poultry Farm at Wesley Grammar Senior High School, with plans to expand the facility into a broader agricultural enterprise that will include fish farming.
Outdooring the project at the school, Madam Aubynn said the vision was to ensure that the government’s bird distribution programme translated into a lasting economic opportunity for constituents rather than ending with the initial distribution.
“We don’t want it to be a one-time programme or a one-time beneficiary programme; rather, we want something sustainable for the constituents,” she said.
The constituency farm is expected to create direct employment for farm hands, while its planned expansion will provide opportunities for women to engage in the sale of eggs and other farm produce.
Beyond job creation, the MP said proceeds from the project would also support the welfare of aged persons in the constituency, giving the initiative a social protection dimension.
Madam Aubynn also identified the Agriculture and Science departments of Wesley Grammar SHS as important beneficiaries of the project, saying students would gain hands-on experience to complement classroom instruction.
She said the poultry facility represented the beginning of a wider agricultural vision, with plans to introduce catfish farming and other agricultural activities to develop the site into a fully-fledged constituency farm.
The MP further encouraged beneficiaries of Nkoko Nkitinkiti to look beyond receiving birds and consider poultry farming as a viable livelihood and career opportunity.
“They should see that it’s a career path that they are also building,” she said, stressing that beneficiaries must properly care for the birds and use the opportunity to grow sustainable enterprises.
The Ablekuma North Municipal Chief Executive, Musa Adamu Kalamu, urged beneficiaries to make productive use of the opportunity, saying the Assembly was committed to making the constituency a model for the programme.
He said the broader objective was to transform Nkoko Nkitinkiti from a distribution exercise into a sustainable constituency asset capable of generating livelihoods beyond the initial batch of birds.
The Headmistress of Wesley Grammar SHS, Barbara Juliet Takyiwaa Thompson, welcomed the project, saying it would strengthen practical learning, particularly for students in the Agriculture and Science departments.
She assured the MP and the Municipal Assembly of the school’s commitment to protecting and maintaining the facility.
