AFROPAC 2026: Atwima Nwabiagya North MP Calls for Stronger Enforcement of Audit Recommendations

The Member of Parliament for Atwima Nwabiagya North, Frank Yeboah has called for stronger parliamentary oversight and effective implementation of audit recommendations to safeguard public funds and improve accountability across Africa.

The legislator, reflecting on the just-ended 6th General Meeting and Conference of the African Organisation of Public Accounts Committees (AFROPAC), said effective oversight must go beyond identifying financial irregularities to ensuring that those responsible for managing public resources are held accountable.

The four-day conference, held in Accra from November 2 to 5, 2026, brought together parliamentarians, Public Accounts Committee (PAC) members, parliamentary officials, auditors and governance experts from across the continent to discuss ways of strengthening accountability in public financial management.

Held under the theme, “Oversight for Resilience: Strengthening Africa’s Public Accounts Committees Amid a Shifting Financial Landscape,” the meeting focused on critical challenges confronting African economies, including rising public debt, tax leakages, corruption and weaknesses in the implementation of audit recommendations.

In a reflection on the conference, the Atwima Nwabiagya North MP said one of the key lessons from the deliberations was the need to ensure that findings of parliamentary oversight institutions translate into concrete action.

According to the legislator, identifying financial irregularities without ensuring that corrective measures are implemented undermines the effectiveness of parliamentary oversight and weakens public confidence in governance institutions.

The MP emphasised that Public Accounts Committees must be adequately resourced and empowered to ensure that public officials comply with audit recommendations and that public funds are used for their intended purposes.

The conference also provided a platform for African legislators and accountability institutions to exchange experiences, share best practices and explore partnerships to strengthen public financial management systems.

The MP said the discussions had reinforced the shared responsibility of African countries to build stronger institutions, promote prudent financial management and ensure that public resources deliver tangible development outcomes for citizens.

The legislator further commended Ghana for hosting the continental gathering, describing the conference as an important opportunity for African parliaments to deepen cooperation in promoting transparency and accountability.

The MP expressed optimism that the lessons and partnerships emerging from the meeting would contribute to strengthening parliamentary oversight and improving the management of public resources across the continent.
