Hamza Suhuyini Cautions NDC General Secretary Over ‘Forceful’ Utterances

A member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Communication Team, Hamza Suhuyini, has raised concerns about some internal dynamics of the party, cautioning that the posture and public comments of the General Secretary, Franklin Fiavi Fifi Kwetey, could create mistrust and deepen internal tensions if not carefully managed.

Speaking on The Big Issue on Channel One TV on Saturday, Mr Suhuyini said while he holds Mr Kwetey in high regard for his strong commitment to the party’s principles, some of his recent utterances risk introducing conflict and could negatively affect the NDC’s future prospects.
The discussion centred on the party’s recently announced guidelines on internal elections and the registration of new members, which have generated debate within party circles over leadership continuity and internal reforms.
Mr Suhuyini cited past instances such as the Kumasi Declaration and comments made around the June 4 Revolution as examples where, in his view, the General Secretary’s strong stance may have fuelled unnecessary internal friction.
“I respect his desire to have a working party and his commitment to our principles, but I am worried that some of his utterances need to be more measured so that in the future they do not hurt the fortunes of the party,” he said.
He emphasized that although the NDC is currently in government, the responsibility for safeguarding party unity does not rest solely on government appointees but on all party actors, especially senior officials whose words carry significant weight.
Mr Suhuyini also referenced ongoing discussions about whether some current government officials, including the Minister for Youth Development and the National Communications Officer, Sammy Gyamfi, should be allowed to contest internal party positions.
According to him, while he personally has no objection to such figures contesting, he agrees with the party’s broader principle of allowing space for new leadership to emerge.
“Party members hardly go to the party office these days; they go to these offices because that is where they know. So I don’t have a problem with those canvassing for the likes of Pablo to contest, but I also respect the principle that they should give way for others,” he noted.
Mr Suhuyini revealed that he had previously made personal political sacrifices in support of Mr Kwetey’s leadership, including abandoning other allies to back his candidacy, because of his belief in his dedication to the party.
However, he maintained that his loyalty does not prevent him from speaking out when he feels the party’s long-term interests may be at risk.
“One of my principles is never to be called into submission when it comes to beliefs I hold. If I feel certain utterances may have future implications, it is my responsibility to prompt him. That is the beauty of the National Democratic Congress,” he stated.
He urged all party leaders, particularly those in influential positions, to be cautious in their public communication, warning that unchecked rhetoric could “spell doom for the party” if it fosters division instead of unity.
