Dr Sulemanu Koney Honoured for Transformational Leadership at 2025 Ghana Mining Industry Awards

Dr. Sulemanu Koney, the immediate past Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Chamber of Mines, was honoured on Friday, 5 December 2025, at the 11th Ghana Mining Industry Awards (GMIA) in Accra for his exceptional leadership and longstanding contributions to Ghana’s mining sector.

Dr. Koney, who previously served as the Chamber’s Director of Analysis, Research and Finance before assuming the CEO role, played a central role in strengthening regulatory engagement, enhancing transparency, and fostering collaboration across the industry.

His tenure was marked by significant contributions to supply chain development, efforts to address security concerns in mining communities, and guidance on key technical reforms within the sector.

A strong advocate for transparency in the extractive industries, Dr. Koney is a founding member of the Steering Committee of the Ghana Extractive Industry Transparency Initiative (GHEITI). He also serves on the Governing Council of the University of Mines and Technology and is a former Board Member of the National Petroleum Authority (NPA).

Prior to joining the Chamber, he worked with Shell Ghana Ltd. Dr. Koney is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Marketing (UK), a member of the Institute of Directors Ghana, and a trained Chemical Engineer. Outside his corporate work, he is an entrepreneur and a passionate football enthusiast.

His recognition at the GMIA highlights his enduring influence on the mining industry and his commitment to promoting responsible, transparent and sustainable practices across the sector.
