Chamber of Agribusiness Welcomes Government’s Nkoko Nkitinkiti Poultry Project

The Chamber of Agribusiness, Ghana, has commended the government for launching the Nkoko Nkitinkiti Project, a flagship initiative designed to boost local poultry production and reduce import dependence.

Under the programme, 50 anchor farmers will initially receive 80,000 birds, with plans to expand the scheme significantly in subsequent phases.

At the official launch, President John Dramani Mahama announced that the project is expected to produce over four million birds annually, a development he said would stimulate local feed demand, create jobs, and strengthen market linkages between producers and processors.

Speaking to Citi Business News and monitored by NR News, Anthony Morrison, Chief Executive Officer of the Chamber of Agribusiness, Ghana, urged the government to broaden the scope of the project to maximise its impact.

“This is just the start. What we have to do is increase the number of anchor farmers in the next disbursement, and that will be fine. If these numbers are raised to 200 farmers across the country, we could reach over two million birds, which would be great,” Morrison said.

“The current figures are a good beginning. What’s most important is ensuring that all the feed is produced locally.”

President Mahama, meanwhile, disclosed that Ghana spent more than $350 million in 2023 on poultry imports, describing it as “a drain on our foreign exchange and a missed opportunity for farmers and entrepreneurs.”

He emphasised the need for Ghanaians to “consume what we ourselves grow,” stressing that the new poultry initiative will serve as a cornerstone for local production, reduce import dependency, and revitalise confidence in the domestic poultry market.

The Nkoko Nkitinkiti Project forms part of the government’s broader Feed Ghana agenda — a pillar of President Mahama’s agricultural transformation strategy aimed at empowering farmers, strengthening food security, and promoting sustainable livelihoods nationwide.
