The Member of Parliament for New Juaben North, Nana Osei-Agyei, has appealed to the government to prioritize the extension of electricity to underserved communities within his constituency, particularly Asuogya near Asikasu in the Eastern Region.
His plea prompted a positive response from the Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, who assured that provision would be made in the 2026 national budget to extend electricity to the community.
This assurance followed a parliamentary question filed by the MP seeking clarity on the ministry’s plans to connect Asuogya to the national grid.
Responding on the floor of Parliament, Mr. Jinapor acknowledged that Asuogya was not currently captured under ongoing rural electrification projects but confirmed that the Finance Minister had committed to including it in next year’s budget.
“Mr Speaker, the ASuogya community does not currently form part of our on-going projects but fortunately, the minister of finance had assured that, in the 2026 budget, there would be adequate budgetary provision. I therefore want to assure my colleague, that once the budget is approved, I would work on this community and capture it as part of the communities we intend to electrify, thank you”, Mr Jinapor stated.
In a brief reaction, Nana Osei-Agyei expressed optimism about the minister’s commitment, saying he looked forward to the fulfillment of the promise.
“Thank you very much Mr Speaker. I thank the minister for the assurance, so I would be looking up to the assurance given to the people of Asuogya, thank you”, he said.
The assurance forms part of government’s broader efforts to achieve universal electricity access by 2030, as outlined in the National Electrification Scheme.
Although Ghana’s electricity access rate stands at over 88 percent, several rural communities, particularly in parts of the Eastern, Northern, and Oti regions, remain off the national grid.
The inclusion of Asuogya in the upcoming budget is therefore expected to help bridge this access gap and improve livelihoods in the area.
