Gov’t to Roll Out Policies to Enhance Tanker Drivers’ Welfare, Ensure Industrial Harmony – Jinapor

The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, says government will prioritise fair treatment and improved working conditions for petroleum tanker drivers.

He was speaking at a high-level meeting with the leadership of the Ghana National Petroleum Tanker Drivers Union (GNPTDU) in Accra.

The engagement, described by the Minister as “productive,” forms part of the Ministry’s broader stakeholder consultations aimed at strengthening Ghana’s downstream petroleum sector and addressing long-standing challenges within the fuel transportation value chain.

Discussions centered on drivers’ welfare, the creation of a structured and transparent salary system, and the elimination of unlawful surcharges that affect tanker operations nationwide.

Mr. Jinapor emphasized that resolving these issues is essential to maintaining stability, safety and efficiency in Ghana’s petroleum supply and distribution network.

“The Ministry, together with the NPA and key stakeholders, will work towards a policy framework that safeguards drivers’ welfare, enhances operational efficiency, and promotes lasting industrial harmony,” the Minister said.

He acknowledged the critical role of tanker drivers in sustaining the country’s economic and social stability, highlighting their contribution to ensuring consistent delivery of petroleum products to all parts of Ghana.

“Their dedication underpins our national development. Without them, our energy economy simply cannot function,” he added.

The Ministry of Energy and Green Transition will work closely with the National Petroleum Authority (NPA) and other relevant agencies to design a comprehensive policy framework that formalizes employment conditions, improves compliance standards, and supports a safer and more transparent downstream logistics system.

Mr. Jinapor expressed confidence that this collaborative approach will not only uplift the welfare of tanker drivers but also strengthen Ghana’s petroleum distribution chain, ensuring reliability, efficiency, and fair labour practices across the sector.
