Parliament Urges MMDAs to Take Audit Findings Seriously

The Local Government and Rural Development committee of Parliament has advised Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies to take audit findings seriously as the Committee has commenced public hearing of Annual Audited Statements of MMDAs in the Middle and Northern zones.

She affirmed that it is important that funds are channeled into productive use and issue are responded to timely while accounting for every money use.

Madam Sawyerr who is also the Member of Parliament for Agona East also he called on them to put in place corrective measures as may be recommended in the report to safe guard the public purse, saying “we must therefore together build the governance system where funds allocated to the assembly is accounted for and visibly translated into development outcome for our people”, she added.

She said in view of the amount of money the government through the Districts Assemblies Common Fund (DACF) has given to the assembly, she said it behoves the Committee to keep the Assemblies in check to ensure value for money and deliver promptly on the needs of the people.

She explained that the Committee’s work focuses on the internal auditor’s report and it is to help them correct the infractions before they get to the Public Accounts Committee.

She affirmed that the directive on the completion of legacy projects is very crucial to rid our communities of uncompleted projects and make those projects useful to society. “They have to finish those projects as you are starting new ones, so that by the next three years we will complete all of them”.

The Local Government and Rural Development Committee of Parliament is currently engaging Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies on their Annual Audited Statements to help improve their performance
