Reshaping of Old Barrier–Aplaku Roads Begins in Earnest

Road reshaping works have commenced on the Old Barrier–Aplaku–Atta Mills High Street stretch through Kokrobite to the Tuba Tollbooth, just a day after the Member of Parliament for Bortianor-Ngleshie Amanfro, Felix Akwatey Okle, assured residents and drivers of government’s commitment to rehabilitating the roads as part of its infrastructure reset agenda.

On Wednesday, 30th April 2025, Hon. Okle, accompanied by the National Coordinator of the District Roads Improvement Programme (DRIP), Edwin Nii Lante Vanderpuye, officials from the Ga South Municipal Assembly, and representatives from J.A. Plant Pool, toured the area to inspect the deplorable state of the roads.
During the inspection and his interactions with drivers and other road users, the MP reiterated his dedication to making the road motorable. He also pledged to support the initial cost of materials needed for the works, in collaboration with the District Coordinating Director.
True to his word, grading and spot improvement works commenced on Thursday, 1st May 2025, under the supervision of the Ga South Municipal Assembly.

Speaking to NR NEWS, Deputy Ga South Maintenance Engineer, Gabriel Fosu Asare, said the ongoing works spearheaded by the MP, the National DRIP Coordinator, and the Assembly, are aimed at improving road accessibility for residents and commuters. The exercise targets severely deteriorated segments along the approximately 13-kilometer stretch from Old Barrier to the Tuba Tollbooth.
He further indicated that continuous monitoring will be undertaken to maintain road conditions until the main contractor mobilizes to the site, as the road has already been repackaged and awarded on contract.
Day one of the project, witnessed by Hon Okle himself, saw the reshaping of damaged portions from the Old Barrier Taxi Rank to the Paa Nii area of Aplaku.
The Atta Mills Highway, which links communities including Old Barrier (off the Mallam–Kasoa Highway), Aplaku, Bortianor, Kokrobite, Oshiyie, Tuba, Nyanyano, and Fetteh, is expected to see continued improvement works through to Friday, 2nd May 2025, ending at the Tuba Tollbooth.
Drivers who spoke to NR NEWS expressed appreciation for the intervention but urged authorities to go a step further by tarring the road to prevent rapid deterioration during the rainy season.
“We thank the Honourable MP and the Assembly for making the road user-friendly. Our only plea is that they don’t stop here, bitumen surfacing is essential so we don’t suffer again,” said one driver who identified himself only as Nana.
