Ghana would earn more in remittances from the export of labour to other countries than it derives from Foreign Direct Investment (FDI), Minister of State-designate for Special Initiatives, Emmanuel Kwadwo Agyekum has reveald.
According to him, the country has excess skilled labour and stands the chance of earning from its export if deliberate efforts are made at training more with specific labour skills for export just like other countries do.
Mr Agyekum disclosed this on Wednesday 28 January, 2025 during his vetting by the Appointments Committee of Parliament.
The Labour Export Programme is one of the key special initiatives president Mahama and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) intends to implement to help curb the increasing youth unemployment rate in the country.
The minister-designate assured that the initiative will not result in brain drain but rather a brain gain for the country.
He indicated that, three batches of trained nurses are currently home without employment opportunities hence the need to export some of the excess labour to other countries that needs them.
Other special initiatives mentioned by the nominee includes light railway system to help solve the vehicular traffic congestion in the national capital, Accra, National Sanitation Day, the goal of making Ghana’s Parliament the most environmentally friendly legislature through for instance, the installation of rooftop solar pannels and encoraging Members of Parliament to drive electronic vehicles among others.
The special initiatives expected to be championed by Mr Emmanuel Agyekum who is MP for Nkoranza South incldes the establishment of the Women’s Development Bank to provide ready and cheaper financial spport to women entrepreneurs.
