Kylian Mbappé Marches Towards Immortality

France captain Kylian Mbappé has moved significantly closer to becoming the greatest goalscorer in FIFA World Cup history after a scintillating brace against Senegal in France’s opening Group I match of the historic 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The 27-year-old superstar not only inspired Les Bleus to victory but also etched his name deeper into football folklore by becoming France’s all-time leading scorer with 58 international goals, overtaking former striker Olivier Giroud’s long-standing record of 57 goals.

Mbappé’s latest exploits have further fuelled discussions that he could eventually become the greatest World Cup goalscorer the sport has ever seen.
The Real Madrid forward now has 14 World Cup goals, moving into joint third place on the all-time scoring charts alongside German legend Gerd Müller, while surpassing Argentine icon Lionel Messi’s tally of 13 goals. Only Brazil’s Ronaldo Nazário (15) and Germany’s Miroslav Klose (16) currently stand ahead of him.
Remarkably, Mbappé has achieved the feat in just 16 World Cup appearances spread across three tournaments – 2018, 2022 and the ongoing 2026 edition.
With potentially several matches remaining in the competition and still years away from the twilight of his career, football analysts believe Klose’s long-standing record is now under serious threat.
The French captain burst onto the global stage at the 2018 World Cup in Russia, scoring four goals, including one in the final against Croatia as France lifted their second world title. Four years later in Qatar, he exploded with eight goals, winning the Golden Boot and becoming only the second player in history to score a hat-trick in a World Cup final after England’s Geoff Hurst in 1966.
Against Senegal, Mbappé once again demonstrated why he is widely regarded as the face of modern football. After a resilient display by the African side, the French captain struck twice to seal victory and establish a new national goalscoring benchmark.
The latest milestone means Mbappé now sits alone atop France’s scoring hierarchy ahead of Olivier Giroud (57), Thierry Henry (51), Antoine Griezmann (44) and Michel Platini (41).
At just 27 years old, Mbappé’s international résumé is already extraordinary.
His career statistics currently include 58 goals for France, 98 international appearances, 14 FIFA World Cup goals, one FIFA World Cup title in 2018 and one World Cup Golden Boot in 2022.
Perhaps the most frightening aspect for defenders worldwide is that time remains firmly on his side.
Should France embark on another deep run in North America and Mbappé maintain his scoring rate, Miroslav Klose’s seemingly untouchable record of 16 World Cup goals could disappear before the tournament concludes. Even if it survives this edition, Mbappé will almost certainly have another opportunity at the 2030 World Cup.
For now, world football is witnessing a player who is no longer merely chasing greatness.
He is rapidly redefining it.
