EPA Moves to Ban Styrofoam in Major Environmental Sustainability Drive

Ghana is set to phase out the use of polystyrene foam products, popularly known as Styrofoam or takeaway packs, as part of sweeping measures aimed at promoting environmental sustainability and reducing plastic pollution across the country.

The Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) in a press statement has announced that the nationwide ban on the production, importation, distribution, sale and use of polystyrene foam products will officially take effect from January 1, 2027.

The move forms part of the government’s broader environmental protection agenda as the country intensifies efforts to tackle plastic waste, improve sanitation and promote sustainable consumption practices.

According to the EPA, the directive will cover a wide range of expanded polystyrene foam products used for commercial and domestic purposes, including food packaging containers, disposable cups and plates, takeaway packs, insulation materials, foam mattresses and packaging materials.

However, products specifically intended for medical, scientific, laboratory and diagnostic purposes will be exempted, subject to regulatory approval.

The Authority described the decision as a critical intervention to safeguard public health and preserve the environment for future generations.

It emphasized that the policy is expected to significantly reduce plastic pollution while encouraging the adoption of environmentally friendly alternatives across industries and households.

As part of the transition process, manufacturers, importers, distributors and users of polystyrene products have been directed to begin shifting towards safer, reusable, recyclable and sustainable alternatives ahead of the implementation date.

The EPA also announced plans to undertake nationwide stakeholder engagements, public education campaigns and technical consultations over the transition period to ensure smooth implementation of the directive.

In addition, the Authority said it would collaborate with Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies, port authorities, customs officials and industry regulators to ensure effective enforcement of the ban once it takes effect.

The EPA further appealed to the public to support the initiative by embracing sustainable consumption habits and environmentally friendly packaging alternatives as Ghana pursues a cleaner and greener future.
