Government to Deploy 1,500 Transformers to Strengthen Power Distribution

Government has announced plans to roll out about 1,500 new transformers across the country by the end of March in a major effort to stabilise electricity supply and reduce frequent power fluctuations.

The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Dr John Abdulai Jinapor, said the initiative is aimed at strengthening Ghana’s power distribution network and improving service delivery to consumers amid rising demand for electricity.

Speaking at the launch of the new corporate strategy of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) in Accra, the Minister emphasized that the government expects improved reliability in electricity supply, especially at a time when tariffs are increasing.

According to him, consumers deserve consistent power once they are connected to the grid.

“Consumers expect reliable electricity, especially when tariffs are going up. It should not be the case that immediately you connect to the grid, the power goes off,” he stated.

Dr. Jinapor explained that government had to step in to support the procurement of the transformers after ECG encountered financial challenges that delayed the acquisition of the equipment.

He indicated that deployment of the transformers will begin by the end of March, with part of the programme also targeting the replacement of ageing equipment in the distribution network to enhance overall system reliability.

For his part, the Acting Managing Director of ECG, Julius Kpekpena, described the company’s new corporate strategy as a transformative blueprint designed to reposition the utility for improved efficiency and financial sustainability.

He said the strategy prioritises operational modernisation, the integration of new technologies into the distribution system, and stronger revenue mobilisation measures.

Mr. Kpekpena also pointed to renewed efforts by the company to clamp down on power theft and illegal connections—longstanding challenges that have significantly affected ECG’s finances.

The planned transformer deployment forms part of a broader set of reforms being implemented to improve electricity reliability and restore financial discipline within Ghana’s power distribution sector.
