President John Dramani Mahama has directed the immediate recall of Ghana’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, Mohammed Baba Jamal Ahmed, popularly known as Baba Jamal, following allegations of voter inducement in the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary primaries held in the Ayawaso East Constituency.
The directive was issued on Saturday after claims emerged that Mr Baba Jamal, who contested in the primaries, was involved in vote-buying activities. The allegations have sparked controversy within the party and prompted internal investigations.
In a statement issued by the Presidency, the President noted that although similar allegations were made against several candidates who participated in the primaries, Mr Baba Jamal was the only serving public officer among them, making his situation particularly sensitive.
The statement further indicated that the NDC has commenced its own internal investigations into the matter, following a public announcement by the party’s General Secretary.
President Mahama explained that the decision to recall Mr Baba Jamal was taken in line with the standards of conduct expected of public officers and the Government’s Code of Conduct for Political Appointees.
“Without prejudice to the ongoing internal party processes, and strictly in view of the need to preserve the integrity of public office, the President considers it necessary to act decisively to avoid any perception of impropriety or conflict,” the statement said.
The recall takes immediate effect, and the Minister for Foreign Affairs has been instructed to initiate the necessary administrative and diplomatic procedures to give effect to the directive.
The statement was signed by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Spokesperson to the President and Minister for Government Communications.
