Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum Pitches Unity and Livable Wages in NPP Flagbearer Race

New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, has presented himself as a consensus-builder capable of uniting the party ahead of the 2028 general elections, while outlining an economic vision anchored on livable wages, skills development and poverty reduction.

Addressing party delegates during his campaign tour across the regions, Dr Adutwum said his approach to politics was driven by policy delivery and tangible improvements in the welfare of ordinary Ghanaians, rather than internal divisions.

He told delegates that his leadership style would guarantee cohesion within the NPP, stressing that his campaign had avoided personal attacks and polarising rhetoric, which he believes positions him as a candidate all factions can rally behind after the primaries.

On the economy, Dr Adutwum pledged to champion a national policy on livable wages, arguing that decent incomes were essential to lifting workers and their families out of poverty.

“Workers must earn wages that allow them to take care of their families, pay school fees and eventually own assets like homes and cars. That is how nations transition out of poverty,” he said.

He expressed concern about unemployment and underemployment, noting that a significant proportion of Ghanaians either had no jobs or remained poor despite being employed, a situation he described as unacceptable for a developing country.

Dr Adutwum linked his livable wage agenda to productivity and skills development, saying economic prosperity could only be achieved if workers were equipped with relevant, modern skills.

He proposed a skills voucher system to enable workers, particularly the youth, to acquire 21st-century competencies, especially in information technology and other growth sectors.

According to him, his broader economic strategy would also prioritise industrialisation, tourism and innovation as key drivers of job creation and sustainable growth.

He concluded that eradicating poverty must be a central national objective, and pledged that his leadership would focus on inclusive policies that expand opportunities, strengthen human capital and ensure that economic growth translated into improved living standards for all Ghanaians.
