The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mr. Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has urged personnel of the Ghana Police Service to uphold the highest standards of integrity and professionalism in the fight against crime nationwide, including illegal mining, commonly referred to as galamsey.
He noted that notwithstanding the significant challenges associated with law enforcement operations challenges which led to the loss of approximately 20 officers in the line of duty in 2025 personnel must remain steadfast, disciplined, and resolute in the enforcement of the law.
Mr. Yohuno made these remarks at a promotion ceremony held at the Police Headquarters in Accra on Wednesday, December 24, 2025, for members of the Special Investigative Team that examined violence related to the 2020 and 2024 general elections, as well as officers of the IGP’s Anti-Galamsey Task Force.
He emphasized the importance of integrity, courage, and loyalty to the Service in the discharge of official responsibilities.
“This selfless work, determination, and perseverance are what we seek to instil in the over 49,000 police personnel serving across the country. Officers must understand that diligence and commitment yield results. One should not work for recognition but with sincerity and dedication, confident that in due time, such efforts will be duly rewarded,” he stated.
Speaking on behalf of the promoted officers of the Special Anti-Galamsey Task Force, Superintendent of Police Bawah Abdul Jalil reaffirmed the team’s unwavering commitment to supporting the IGP in combating illegal mining and other criminal activities.
He explained that the task force was deployed to the Ashanti Region with a contingent of 105 officers, with a mandate to restore order and enforce the law. He recounted that the team encountered resistance during operations, particularly in relation to the seizure of excavators, including incidents involving armed attacks.
“We were confronted with hostile situations and came under gunfire; however, the situation was eventually brought under control. The facts and outcomes of our operations are available for public scrutiny,” he said.
Also speaking on behalf of the Special Investigative Team that investigated the 2020 and 2024 election-related violence, Chief Superintendent of Police John Kwaku Lodonu indicated that while some prosecutions have already been secured, the team remains committed to ensuring that all election-related offences are comprehensively investigated and addressed in accordance with the law.
