Unemployed Environmental Health Officers to Protest Years of Joblessness

Unemployed Environmental Health Officers and Assistants have announced plans to stage a demonstration on Monday, December 15, 2025, to protest what they describe as prolonged unemployment and sustained neglect by the state.

In a statement, the group said the protest is aimed at demanding immediate employment, postings and formal recognition for trained Environmental Health Officers, Assistants and graduates of the School of Hygiene.

According to the organisers, the demonstration will commence at Independence Square in Accra and proceed through key ministries and state institutions responsible for sanitation, health and local governance.

The group assured the public that the march will be peaceful and orderly, featuring organised chants and traditional Jama performances to draw attention to what it described as more than five years of delayed postings and the continued underutilisation of trained professionals.

“At every ministry we pass, we will respectfully but firmly demand answers. Ghana needs sanitation officers now, and the government must act,” the statement said.

The association stressed that the protest is not intended to disrupt public order, but rather to highlight the urgent need for effective sanitation enforcement and environmental health protection, particularly in the face of persistent public health risks.

It noted that Environmental Health Officers are trained and licensed by the Allied Health Professions Council to safeguard public health and the environment, yet continue to be sidelined despite escalating sanitation challenges across the country.

The group has therefore called on media organisations across print, broadcast and digital platforms to cover the demonstration, describing it as a civic action in the national interest.

“Sanitation is national security, and Ghana cannot continue to delay the enforcement of sanitation laws,” the statement added.
