The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has launched an internal investigation into allegations of extortion levelled against members of the Customs Division Task Force operating in the Ashanti Region.
The move follows complaints by the Traders Advocacy Group Ghana (TAGG), which claims some Customs officers engaged in extortion during operations involving containers bound for Kumasi.
According to the allegations, task force officers intercepted certain containers en route to Kumasi, accused the importers of undervaluing their goods and demanded additional payments. The affected importer reportedly challenged these extra demands as unjustified.
In a statement issued by its Communication and Public Affairs Department, the GRA said it is treating the matter with utmost seriousness and has already begun a comprehensive internal probe to establish the facts.
“The internal investigation will be comprehensive, and the general public will be informed about the outcome as soon as it is concluded,” the Authority assured.
The GRA reiterated its commitment to integrity, transparency and fairness in all its operations and stressed that it expects the highest ethical standards from its staff.
The Authority also encouraged traders, importers and the general public to support its efforts to curb malpractice by promptly reporting any suspected wrongdoing through its established complaint and reporting channels.
The statement emphasized that upholding public trust is central to GRA’s mandate and that any officer found culpable of misconduct would face appropriate sanctions.
