Pru West MP Commends President Mahama’s Commitment to Youth Development on World Population Day

The Member of Parliament for Pru West, Emmanuel Kofi Ntekuni, has commended President John Dramani Mahama for his unwavering dedication to the development of young people in Ghana.

Speaking on the floor of Parliament on Friday, July 11, 2025, in a statement to mark World Population Day, Hon Ntekuni praised the President’s commitment to human development, population management, and job creation efforts he said continue to resonate across the country.

“Rt. Hon. Speaker, I believe we are on the right path, and I say this with confidence, especially in light of the tireless efforts and goodwill demonstrated by H.E. John Dramani Mahama, a leader whose unwavering commitment to human development, population management, and job creation continues to resonate across Ghana,” Hon. Ntekuni stated.

He noted that under his renewed leadership, the country is witnessing people-centered policies that are directly empowering the youth to shape their future.

The Pru West MP underscored the importance of creating an enabling environment that empowers young people to be at the heart of national development. He emphasized the need for policies that allow young Ghanaians to make informed choices about family planning while pursuing economic opportunities.

“It is not about controlling families, but about creating the conditions where young Ghanaians can confidently and freely decide the size and timing of their families in a fair and hopeful environment. This is why World Population Day is not merely a celebration, it is a call to action.”

He called for the strengthening of the Ghanaian family system, describing it as a critical pillar of social cohesion, cultural identity, and national development.

“The family system remains the bedrock of social stability, cultural identity, and national development across the world. Families, in all their diverse forms, shape values, nurture potential, and provide the first line of care and support for individuals,” he said.

“From the extended family networks that provide social safety nets to the community values that bind us together, the Ghanaian family is central to our cultural fabric.”

While lauding Ghana’s family values, Mr Ntekuni acknowledged that modern challenges such as early and unintended pregnancies, inadequate access to sexual and reproductive health education, unemployment, and economic hardship hinder many young people from realizing their full potential.

“We must also acknowledge the evolving challenges facing families in our country today. These issues often constrain young Ghanaians from building the families they truly desire.”

This year’s World Population Day is being marked under the theme: “Empowering Young People to Create the Families They Want in a Fair and Hopeful World.”
