Parliamentary business not easy but rewarding, take it seriously- Armah-Kofi Buah to new MPs

Deputy Majority Leader in Ghana’s Parliament, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, has advised first-term members to take the business of the House seriously as they begin their four-year tenure as elected representatives of their various constituencies.

The former Energy Minister who said this during an orientation and an induction exercise for first-time lawmakers on Saturday, urged his new colleagues to take business of the house seriously and worker extra hard if they want to achieve success as lawmakers.

“As you embark on this new journey I urge you to take the business of Parliament seriously. The work ahead will not be easy but it will be rewarding. Our democracy depends on the principles of justice, equity and accountability,” the Deputy Majority Leader urged.

He admonished the 115 new entrants to “rise above interest and focus on the greater good of the Ghanaian people”.

Mr Buah who is currently a 5th term MP for Ellembele encouraged his colleague lawmakers to be curious and endeavour to enquire more about how Parliament works.

“As you engage in these topics over the coming days, I encourage you to be open, ask questions. And I think it is important that I add: Make new friends. Engage more,” he said to them. “No question in Parliament is a stupid question.”

The orientation of first-time MPs was attended by the leadership of Parliament including Speaker Alban Bagbin, the Deputy Speakers, Leaders of both sides of the aisle, the Clerk to Parliament and other officials in the legislature.

The event was devoid of politics as speakers took turns encouraging the fresh term legislators to bridge gaps and work together during their term in office.
