The Member of Parliament for Korle Klottey, Dr Zanetor Agyemang Rawlings has expressed concern about the recent pollution of Ghana’s Rivers and forests, as a result of galamsay in a tribute to her late Father, Former President Jerry John Rawlings.
Zanetor described her late father as someone who cared for the environment with passion.
Millions of people in Ghana face the dangerous consequences of illegal gold mining.
The practice, known locally as “galamsey,” has led to widespread environmental degradation, particularly in rural communities.
Despite a national outcry, illegal mining persists, undermining Ghana’s agricultural potential and public health as rivers are contaminated with toxic chemicals. Both locals and foreigners are involved in the business of galamsey.
In a tribute on Facebook to mark the 4th anniversary of Jerry John Rawling’s death on Tuesday (12 November), Zanetor said “Papa J! It’s been 4 years since you passed, yet it seems like yesterday. You always thought about the plight of your fellow human being and you cared for the environment with such passion.”
“If you could see Ghana’s #rivers and #forests now! You always believed that the qualities of ethical leadership reside in each of us. Thank you. We must each dig deep and find within us the light that will restore hope for all.”
She added “We must care beyond our own selfish wants and desires. We must strive to leave a lasting legacy to the next generation. Forever in our hearts, Dad.”
