The Bank of Ghana (BoG) has announced the introduction of a new series of Ghana cedi banknotes, known as the “Heritage Series,” with the new notes expected to be launched in November 2026.
Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr Johnson Pandit Asiama, announced the development on Thursday, September 24, 2026, at a press conference following the conclusion of the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meeting.
According to him, the new notes would be used alongside the existing notes of all denominations, urging the public to avoid any panic withdrawals.
The new banknotes are expected to feature enhanced security features and other improvements aimed at strengthening the integrity of Ghana’s currency and making the notes more secure and durable.
The Heritage Series will also incorporate elements reflecting Ghana’s national heritage, marking another stage in the evolution of the cedi.
The introduction comes as the Bank of Ghana continues efforts to modernise the currency and respond to changing requirements in the country’s cash economy.
The central bank has previously announced the introduction of new higher-value denominations as part of measures to improve efficiency in cash transactions and reduce the volume of notes required for large-value payments.

MPC maintains policy rate at 14%
The announcement of the Heritage Series coincided with the MPC’s decision to maintain the Monetary Policy Rate at 14 percent.
The decision keeps the benchmark policy rate unchanged as the central bank continues to assess inflation, economic growth, exchange-rate developments and external risks.
Ghana’s headline inflation stood at 5 percent in August 2026, while the economy recorded real GDP growth of 6 percent in the second quarter, according to Dr Asiama.
The Governor said domestic economic conditions remained stable and broadly positive, although the Bank would continue to monitor external developments, including global oil prices and financial conditions.
The launch of the Heritage Series in November will therefore mark a significant development in Ghana’s currency landscape, with the BoG expected to provide further details on the denominations, designs and security features ahead of the official rollout.
