YCWM Expands Annual Blood Donation Drive to include Health Screening

The Young Christian Workers Movement (YCWM) of Christ the King Catholic Church has broadened its annual blood donation campaign to include multiple health screening services, reinforcing its commitment to saving lives and promoting preventive healthcare.

The exercise, held on Sunday, October 18, 2026, at the forecourt of the church in Accra, featured blood donation led by the National Blood Bank of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital (KBTH), alongside eye and dental screenings, prostate screening and lipid profile testing provided by other participating health institutions.

The initiative brought together healthcare professionals and voluntary donors in a community-centred effort to support the national blood supply while encouraging people to take a more proactive approach to their health.

A Senior Blood Donor Organiser at the KBTH, Ms. Emma Dei, expressed satisfaction with the conduct of the exercise and called on the public to make voluntary blood donation a regular practice.

She emphasised the importance of maintaining adequate stocks at the national blood bank to ensure that patients, particularly those requiring emergency treatment and other critical medical care, have access to blood when they need it.

Ms Dei encouraged eligible members of the public to see blood donation as a practical way of helping to save lives, noting the importance of sustained public participation in strengthening the country’s blood supply.

The President of the YCWM of the church, Ms. Lucy Dzata, reaffirmed the movement’s commitment to the annual initiative, which has been organised for more than 15 years.

The exercise, she said, reflected the YCWM’s dedication to serving the wider community and supporting healthcare delivery through voluntary action and collaboration with medical institutions.

This year’s inclusion of several screening services also broadened the impact of the campaign, giving participants an opportunity to attend to aspects of their health while contributing to a lifesaving cause.

The Parish Priest of Christ the King Catholic Church, Rev. Fr. Ebenezer Akesse, described the exercise an expression of the Church’s wider commitment to compassion, solidarity and service to humanity.

For the donors, the exercise offered an opportunity to make a tangible contribution to the welfare of others. Their participation reinforced the importance of voluntary blood donation and community involvement in supporting patients whose survival may depend on the availability of safe blood.

The annual campaign remains one of the YCWM’s longstanding community-service initiatives, with its partnership with health institutions highlighting the value of collective action in promoting public health and strengthening healthcare delivery in Ghana.
