The Member of Parliament for Kwesimintsim in the Western Region, Lawyer Philip Fiifi Buckman has urged the urgent need for a collective effort towards building a society that upholds the values of human dignity by eliminating of all forms of social injustice.
Mr Buckman made the call on the floor of Parliament on Thursday 20, February 2025 in a contribution to various statements to mark this year’s observation of World Day of Social Justice.
The MP retold the story of a young hungry girl who was asked by a priest about her religious denomination, whether a muslim or a christian. The simply response of the helpless young girls was that she needed food to eat.
The lawmaker said the story of the girl underscore the value of human dignity stating that; “poverty knows no religion, poverty knows no political or party affiliation”.
According to the private legal practitioner, fairness is a behaviour devoid of discrimination against other persons of irrespective of creed, colour or religious affliliation whiles justice is fair treatment to all and epressed optimistic that with a united front, issues of socialjustice can be eliminated from society.
“With a collective effort as a people, we would all have to stand up against social injustices”.
The Kwesimintsim lawmaker indicated that article 5 and 6 of the 1992 constitution aimed at protecting and uplifting human dignity stating that social justice demand the provision of equal access to basic needs of life including education, job opportunities, financial resources, access to public schools among others.
He commended all for their individual efforts towards promoting human dignity.
The United Nation (UN) General Assembly in 2007 designated February 20 to remind all of the need to build a fairer and more equitable world and to urge all efforts to combat unemployment and poverty.
“Empowering Inclusion: Bridging Gaps for Social Justice”, was the theme for the 2025 Social Justice Day.
