With less than three months to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the Ghana Football Association has made a high-stakes managerial switch, appointing seasoned Portuguese tactician Carlos Queiroz as head coach of the senior national team, the Black Stars.
The decision comes on the back of mounting pressure following the dismissal of former coach Otto Addo, whose tenure ended abruptly just 72 days before the mundial after a string of poor results, including heavy friendly defeats and failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
A Firefighter with Global Pedigree
At 73, Queiroz arrives in Ghana with one of the most extensive managerial résumés in world football. A former head coach of Real Madrid and long-time assistant to Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United, he is widely regarded as a tactician with deep experience at the elite level.
His international coaching credentials are equally formidable. Queiroz has managed several national teams, including Portugal, Iran, Egypt, Colombia, South Africa, and most recently Oman, bringing a wealth of World Cup experience and tournament know-how to Ghana’s bench.
Notably, he guided Portugal national football team to the 2010 FIFA World Cup and led Iran national football team to back-to-back World Cup appearances in 2014 and 2018, earning a reputation for building disciplined, defensively solid teams.
Short-Term Mission, High Stakes
Reports indicate that Queiroz’s appointment is likely on a short-term basis, with a clear mandate: stabilize the team and lead Ghana through the 2026 World Cup.
The urgency surrounding the appointment reflects Ghana’s precarious situation. The Black Stars, four-time African champions, are preparing for their fifth World Cup appearance but head into the tournament amid inconsistency and waning confidence.
Drawn in a challenging group that includes England, Croatia, and Panama, Ghana faces a daunting task of restoring its competitive edge on football’s biggest stage.
From Crisis to Opportunity
Queiroz’s immediate challenge will be to galvanize a talented but underperforming squad featuring Premier League stars and emerging talents. His pragmatic approach, tactical discipline, and experience in tournament football are expected to be key assets as Ghana seeks to defy expectations.
For the GFA, the appointment signals a shift toward experience over experimentation—a calculated gamble that a proven World Cup strategist can deliver results under intense pressure.
Whether Queiroz can engineer a late revival for the Black Stars remains to be seen, but with the clock ticking toward kickoff in North America, Ghana has placed its hopes in a coach accustomed to football’s biggest stages.
