Energy Minister Assures Parliament of Progress on Ghana’s Nuclear Power Programme

The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Dr John Abdulai Jinapor, has assured Parliament that Ghana is making steady progress toward establishing a nuclear power plant as part of efforts to strengthen long-term energy security.
The Minister gave the update when he appeared before the Government Assurances Committee of Parliament on Tuesday, March 24, 2026, to respond to questions on commitments made to the House.
Responding to a public interest question from Ablekuma North MP, Ewurabena Aubynn, on the status of the nuclear power programme, Dr. Jinapor said government has already taken several steps, including signing key agreements and engaging potential international partners.
According to him, countries such as the United States, Russia, China and France have expressed interest in supporting Ghana’s nuclear power development.
“We are making progress. We have signed some agreements, and the countries we are really dealing with as well as the US, Russia, China and of course France have expressed interest,” the Minister told the committee.
He explained that the nuclear development process requires careful procedures due to safety considerations and regulatory requirements, which can take time to complete.
Dr. Jinapor also revealed that Ghana recently held discussions with the United States aimed at finalising another agreement to advance the programme.
“Last two weeks we had a meeting with the United States where we are trying to sign an agreement with them. We just have some slight difference with a particular clause where the Ghanaian negotiation team is insisting on some phraseology. Once we are done with that, we’ll sign it and accelerate the phase of nuclear power,” he said.
The Minister emphasised that government remains committed to advancing the nuclear initiative as part of long-term plans to provide reliable and sustainable electricity for the country’s development agenda.
