Ghana Reverts Kotoka Airport to Original Accra Name

The Government of Ghana has officially renamed Kotoka International Airport, restoring the facility to its original designation as Accra International Airport.
In a press release issued on 23 February 2026, the Ministry of Transport announced that the decision takes immediate effect, describing the move as a reversion to the airport’s “former and internationally recognised name.”
The airport, located in the capital, Accra, was previously known as Accra International Airport before it was redesignated as Kotoka International Airport. Authorities say the renaming forms part of efforts to restore the facility’s original identity while maintaining continuity in operations.
The Ministry stressed that the change will not affect airport operations, safety standards or international travel arrangements. It noted that within the records of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), the airport code has remained “ACC”, indicating no alteration to its global aviation designation.
Officials added that implementation of the new name will involve systematic updates to official documentation, statutory instruments where necessary, airport signage, digital platforms, aviation publications and related communication materials.
The government has appealed to the general public, stakeholders and international partners to cooperate with the relevant authorities to ensure a smooth transition.
The Ministry of Transport expressed appreciation for the continued support of all stakeholders as the renaming process takes effect.
