Catholic Church Honours Ghana’s Speaker of Parliament

The Catholic Church has honoured the Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, for his enduring legacy as a leader rooted in wisdom, service and integrity.
The recognition was conferred by the Wa Diocese of the Catholic Church during a Eucharistic Celebration held in his honour at the Chapel of the Bishop of Wa Diocese on January 30, 2026.
In a sermon delivered at the ceremony, the Bishop of Wa Diocese, Most Rev. Francis Bomansan, M.Afr., praised the Speaker’s exceptional statesmanship and passion for the underprivileged, describing him as a selfless servant leader whose contribution to national development has been significant.
According to the Bishop, both the Upper West Region and Ghana as a whole are privileged to have a virtuous Catholic and committed public servant as Speaker of Parliament.
A citation presented to Rt. Hon. Bagbin described him as a Christ-like leader and a paragon of humility, service, love and integrity. It further noted that in an era where truth and integrity are increasingly rare among public servants, the Speaker stands out as a towering figure whose honesty serves as a guiding light.
In a brief statement after receiving the honour, Rt. Hon. Bagbin expressed gratitude to the Catholic Church for the recognition and called for continued prayers and spiritual guidance for national leadership.
He acknowledged the vital role of the Catholic Church in Ghana’s development, particularly in underprivileged regions such as the Upper West, describing the Church as a foundation stone for development in Northern Ghana.
The Speaker commended the Church for its contribution to education and healthcare, noting that it operates some of the best schools and health facilities in the region.
Rt. Hon. Bagbin further encouraged the Church to continue addressing both the spiritual and material needs of the vulnerable and pledged Parliament’s continued support for the initiatives of religious bodies across the country.
The event concluded with prayers led by the Bishop and a congregation of priests, who invoked God’s blessings and good health for the Speaker.
The honour forms part of the Catholic Church’s efforts to recognise leadership that reflects moral values, humility and service to humanity.
