Energy and Green Transition Minister, Dr. John Abdulai Jinapor, has assured Ghanaians of a stable electricity supply, despite the national grid recording a historic peak in power demand during the ongoing festive season.
According to the Minister, surging energy consumption is placing unprecedented pressure on the power system, requiring intensified efforts to keep the lights on.
“We are seeing a huge increase in energy consumption, and that presents a challenge. It means we have to work very hard to sustain the lights and keep the lights on,” Dr. Jinapor said.
He gave the assurance while addressing participants at a health walk organised by the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition, in collaboration with its agencies, under the theme “Recharge, Refocus and Reconnect.”
Dr. Jinapor disclosed that the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) recently recorded an all-time peak electricity demand of about 4,300 megawatts, highlighting the growing strain on the national grid.
Despite the challenge, the Minister said measures are in place to maintain system stability, noting that the Ministry and its agencies are working around the clock to manage demand pressures.
“Let me assure the people of Ghana that we are holding on. It is very challenging, but we are making significant improvements and will continue to work hard to deliver on our mandate,” he stated.
He outlined short- and long-term strategies to support the power sector, including improving fuel supply for thermal plants, strengthening domestic petroleum production, and accelerating the rollout of renewable energy projects to reduce reliance on conventional power sources.
Addressing legal professionals from the Ministry and its agencies who participated in the walk, Dr. Jinapor underscored their role in protecting the sector’s interests, particularly in contract review and negotiations.
The Minister also praised the health walk initiative, describing it as a valuable platform for promoting staff wellness and inter-agency collaboration, and proposed that it be institutionalised as a quarterly activity.
He concluded by reaffirming government’s commitment to delivering reliable and uninterrupted power supply to support economic activity, especially during peak demand periods.
