Hope for Bawku as Asantehene Presents Mediation Report to President Mahama

Ghanaians at home and in the diaspora are looking on with renewed hope as the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, on Tuesday, December 16, 2025, presented his mediation report on the Bawku conflict to President John Dramani Mahama.

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II was appointed earlier in 2025 by President Mahama to lead mediation efforts to resolve the decades-long chieftaincy dispute in Bawku and its surrounding areas. The peace process formally began in April, with the Asantehene holding separate consultations with representatives of the feuding factions to open channels for dialogue.

Although the mediation talks were briefly suspended, they resumed in May 2025 and have since helped usher in a period of relative calm in the conflict-prone municipality.

The report, which is expected to highlight key findings, progress achieved, and proposed recommendations, is anticipated to shape the next phase of government action toward achieving lasting peace and stability in Bawku.

In the meantime, the Ghana Armed Forces say they have stepped up security operations in the area to maintain law and order while the mediation process continues.

Speaking on Monday, December 15, the Commander of the 11th Battalion of the Ghana Armed Forces in the Upper East Region, Lieutenant Colonel Isaac Boako, expressed confidence that the combined security and mediation efforts would bring an end to the violence.

“With our monitoring and the Otumfuo-led mediation, including the recent meetings with the factions in Bawku, we believe these attacks will come to an end and the community can return to normalcy,” he said.

Bawku has witnessed intermittent violence over the years due to protracted chieftaincy disputes, sparking persistent calls for sustained dialogue and strengthened security interventions to restore lasting peace.
