Newmont emerged as one of the standout performers at the 2025 Ghana Mining Industry Awards (GMIA), securing several major honours for excellence in innovation, environmental stewardship and community development.
The company’s Ahafo South mine delivered an exceptional showing, winning Best Green Mine and Best Performer in Innovation. It also earned 1st Runner-up for Best Performer in Environmental Management, 2nd Runner-up for Best Performer in Exploration (Senior Category) and 2nd Runner-up for Best Performer in Corporate Social Investment Project, reinforcing its leadership in sustainable and responsible mining.
Newmont’s newest large-scale operation, the Ahafo North mine, was also named 1st Runner-up for Best Performer in Corporate Social Investment Project, reflecting its growing impact on host communities.
Individual excellence was also celebrated. Abena Acheampomaa Ankomah, Lead for Communities and Social Performance at Ahafo North, was awarded Female Mining Professional of the Year (Non-Technical) for her outstanding leadership in community engagement and commitment to sustainable development.
The industry paid tribute to the late Kwame Addo-Kufuor Jnr., honouring him posthumously with a Lifetime Achievement Award for his significant contributions to Ghana’s mining sector, including his work as Newmont Ghana’s former Head of Government Relations and his tenure as President of the Ghana Chamber of Mines.
Reflecting on the company’s achievements, Danquah Addo-Yobo, Country Manager for Newmont Ghana, described 2025 as “a defining year,” noting the successful transition of Ahafo North into an operational mine and the milestone of 10 million ounces of gold production at Ahafo South.
“Awards such as the ones we received at the Ghana Mining Industry Awards remind us of the responsibility we bear as industry leaders, in terms of our mining practices and the value we generate for communities and the country,” he said.
