Oforikrom MP Dismisses 2026 Budget as Promises Without Delivery

Member of Parliament for Oforikrom, Michael Kwasi Addo, has taken strong exception to the 2026 Budget Statement and Economic Policy, arguing that it is overloaded with promises that are unlikely to be fulfilled.

Making his remarks on the floor of Parliament during contributions to comments on the 2026 budget presented by the Minister for Finance, Mr. Addo said the document lacks a credible plan to drive economic growth or address the country’s debt burden. He argued that many of the commitments captured in the budget mirror pledges the government has repeatedly failed to deliver in previous years.

He noted that the administration’s track record offers little confidence that the proposals outlined will materialise, describing the budget as heavy on assurances but weak on realistic action.

Mr. Addo said he had expected a forward-looking budget focused on stimulating growth while safeguarding debt sustainability. Instead, he argued, the budget offers “more promises without the evidence of growth,” based on the economic performance recorded over the past year.

He also cited unfulfilled commitments in the 2025 Budget, particularly the pledge to rehabilitate four major sports facilities — the Baba Yara Sports Stadium, the Accra Sports Stadium, the Abiriw Sports Stadium, and the Essipon Sports Stadium. He said no meaningful progress has been made on any of these projects.

According to him, the lack of action is so glaring that the Minister for Youth and Sports visited the Essipon Sports Stadium “empty-handed” because he anticipated that questions about the stalled projects would arise during the budget debate.
