Energy Minister Inaugurates Nuclear Power Ghana Board, Calls for Accelerated Path Toward Nuclear Energy

The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, has inaugurated the newly constituted Board of Nuclear Power Ghana (NPG), renewing government’s commitment to finally delivering on the country’s decades-long ambition to integrate nuclear energy into the national power mix.

In post on Facebook by Mr Jinapor, the Minister said Ghana’s aspiration to develop nuclear power dates back to the era of the First President, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, yet the objective has remained unfulfilled despite several attempts over the years.

He noted that global experience has consistently shown that nations seeking sustained economic growth must secure stable, affordable baseload power—and nuclear energy stands out as one of the most reliable pathways to achieve this.

“Every country that desires long-term growth needs access to dependable and cost-effective energy,” Mr. Jinapor said. “Nuclear power remains one of the most reliable options, and it is time for Ghana to take bold, deliberate steps to add nuclear power to our national energy mix.”

The Minister charged the newly inaugurated Board to “break new ground, accelerate progress, and deliver on the long-standing objective” of establishing nuclear power as a key component of Ghana’s energy future.

The members of the new Board are:

  • Emmanuel Appiah-Korang — Chairman

  • Ing. Samuel Boakye Dampare

  • Ing. Edward Obeng-Kenzo

  • Bernard Kofi Ellis

  • Benedict Kofi Wompeh

  • Nana Akyaa Amoah-Amissah

Mr. Jinapor reaffirmed government’s commitment to a clean and reliable energy transition, adding that nuclear power will play a central role in ensuring long-term stability in the power sector and supporting industrialisation.

He expressed confidence that with renewed leadership and policy direction, Ghana is positioned to make significant strides towards becoming a nuclear-powered nation.
