Bekwai MP Demands Permanent Fix for Deplorable Constituency Roads

The Member of Parliament for Bekwai, Ralph Poku-Adusei, is appealing for the permanent rehabilitation of major roads in his constituency, citing years of stalled works and deteriorating road conditions. His call follows a parliamentary question he posed to the Minister for Roads and Highways on the status of the Kensere-Pampaso and Dotom-Koniyaw roads.

Addressing Parliament, Mr Poku-Adusei said the state of roads in Bekwai continues to hinder transportation, economic activity, and access to social services, stressing that residents deserve durable road infrastructure, not periodic patchworks.

Responding to the question, Roads and Highways Minister Kwame Governs Agbodza confirmed that both roads are in poor condition and that work has stalled due to funding delays.

On the Kensere-Pampaso road, the minister explained that the 9.4km stretch—captured in the Department of Feeder Roads database as Ankaase-Kensere-Homase feeder road—serves as an inter-district link between the Bekwai Municipality and the Amansie Central District. Although awarded for upgrading under a contract that commenced on 28 January 2021 and was expected to be completed within a year, progress currently stands at 31%, with the contractor absent from site due to delayed payments.

For the Dotom-Koniyaw road, a 7km engineered gravel road in similar disrepair, Mr Agbodza said the upgrading contract began on 18 May 2021 for completion by May 2022. However, work has only reached 19% completion, also stalled as a result of unpaid certificates.

He assured Parliament that the ministry is making efforts to mobilise the contractors back to site to complete the outstanding works.

Mr Poku-Adusei urged the ministry to take swift action, emphasising that communities in Bekwai cannot continue to wait indefinitely for essential road upgrades that directly impact livelihoods, transportation, and economic growth.
