Government to Revamp VALCO to Strengthen Aluminium Value Chain — Natural Resources Minister

The Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, has announced that the government is taking decisive steps to revamp the Volta Aluminium Company Limited (VALCO) to enhance value addition, restore profitability, and attract strategic investments into the aluminium sector.

According to the minister, the initiative is part of a broader national strategy to maximise Ghana’s aluminium value chain, create sustainable jobs, and stimulate economic growth through increased local processing and industrial activity.

Speaking during a visit to VALCO on Tuesday, October 28, Mr. Buah disclosed that the government has already begun engaging investors and strategic partners to facilitate the company’s transformation and position it as a competitive player in the global aluminium market.

“We are still stuck, not even close to the two ports that we are striving for. Because of that, it really hinders profitability and brings about inefficiency in the use of energy. But we also know the potential of VALCO. Just the first phase of the value addition that has been done is translating into all the things you see here. It tells you that this is a sleeping lion that we must all work hard to bring up,” he said.

Mr. Buah emphasised that revitalising VALCO remains central to the government’s industrialisation and natural resource development agenda, aimed at ensuring that Ghana derives greater value from its mineral resources.
