A total of 63 Members of Parliament from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) minority caucus have formally declared their support to Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia to become the party’s next flagbearer, ahead of the NPP’s much-anticipated presidential primaries in January 2026.
In a jointly signed statement titled “Statement of Support and Declaration for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia,” the MPs described the Vice President as the embodiment of the party’s values of freedom, democracy, rule of law, and enterprise, tracing his leadership philosophy to the legacy of the NPP’s founding fathers, Dr. J. B. Danquah, Dr. K. A. Busia, and Chief S. D. Dombo.
The declaration, coordinated by Kwaku Ampratwum-Sarpong, MP for Mampong, marks one of the largest organized endorsements yet within the NPP parliamentary caucus for Dr. Bawumia Bawumia
This according to the group follows weeks of consultations and individual expressions of support across various regions.
“Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia represents the enduring spirit of our party, visionary, resilient, diligent, and pragmatic,” the statement read.
“He has proven that leadership is not about words but work, not about entitlement but excellence and delivery.”
The MPs cited Dr. Bawumia’s contributions to digital transformation, financial inclusion, and the modernization of public service delivery as evidence of his capacity to lead both party and nation into what they described as “a new era of progress, opportunity, and national pride.”
According to the group, their declaration is grounded in conviction rather than sentiment.
“We have seen his work, his discipline, resilience, and readiness to serve. We believe Dr. Bawumia embodies the next chapter of the NPP’s vision, a future built on competence, innovation, unity, and hope,” they said.
The MPs also issued a passionate appeal to NPP delegates nationwide to “reward loyalty, humility, and hard work with trust” and to “choose the man who has walked the path, carried the burden, and delivered results.”
They described Dr. Bawumia as the candidate capable of uniting the party and winning the confidence of the Ghanaian people, asserting that he possesses the qualities needed to secure victory for the NPP in the 2028 general elections and beyond.
“He carries Danquah’s courage, Busia’s intellect, and Dombo’s humility and unifying heart,” the statement concluded. “With him, the NPP will not only win but lead Ghana into a new era of progress, opportunity, and national pride.”
The declaration was signed by prominent MPs including Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, Frank Annoh-Dompreh, Samuel Abu Jinapor, Mustapha Ussif, Dominic Nitiwul, Francis Asenso-Boakye, Dr. Nana Ayew Afriyie, and several others drawn from the Ashanti, Bono, Bono East, Northern, and Eastern Regions.
With 63 out of 87 minority NPP MPs now publicly endorsing Dr. Bawumia’s bid, the momentum within the parliamentary caucus appears to have tilted decisively in his favour, a development analysts say could significantly influence delegate sentiment in the lead-up to the party’s internal elections.
